Provincial Government Supporting Enhanced Cellular Coverage

As part of the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador’s commitment to enhancing cellular coverage in the province, the Honourable Andrew Parsons, KC, Minister of Industry, Energy and Technology, today announced approximately $2 million to support cellular upgrades in three communities.

Through a commitment of $2 million over five years, the Provincial Government is working with Bell to further grow rural cellular coverage in the province. Based on proximity to existing towers, existing coverage, need and impact, along with data available from federal agencies, Heart’s Delight-Islington, Holyrood and Trinity East were selected to receive enhanced coverage. It is anticipated the work will take place over the next two years.

This funding is part of the agreement for the Province-Wide Radio System that was announced in 2023. With an investment of over $181 million over 12 years, the system supports the way emergency responders and government – such as the RNC, RCMP, firefighters, paramedics and other public service providers – communicate with each other during emergencies.

While cellular telecommunications is a federal responsibility, the Provincial Government continues to advocate to the Federal Government and identify potential partners and solutions to improve cellular services on highways and roadways in rural or remote communities throughout Newfoundland and Labrador.
