Trail development adds immense value to Newfoundland and Labrador communities by expanding tourism attraction offerings and recreation opportunities. The Honourable Steve Crocker, Minister of Industry, Energy and Technology, today announced an investment of $45,000 from the Regional Development Fund to support the West Coast Cycling Association (WCCA) in developing a contained trail network in the Lower Humber Valley.
The goal of this project is the development of a trail network in the Lower Humber Valley, along with enhanced market data collection using trail counters. Riders will be able to start at a trailhead and ride on a self-contained network of trails before returning to the trailhead without having to ride on resource roads, highways, or municipal roads.
The project will incorporate specialized training delivered by a professional trail designer and builder, ensuring that the project meets world-class standards. This hands-on training will enhance the skills of local trail builders and WCCA members, significantly increasing their capacity to build professional-grade trails that meet global benchmarks.
The cycling association has been developing mountain bike trails and hosting cycling events on the west coast of Newfoundland since 2010. In partnership with a trail building professional from the International Mountain Biking Association, they developed a master plan for the Corner Brook/Massey Drive trail system and has successfully built a network of high-quality and sustainable trails.
The Provincial Government’s contribution will leverage $126,000 from other sources and a client investment of $23,000 for a total project cost of almost $195,000. The Regional Development Fund provides support to organizations by way of non-repayable contributions for projects aimed at supporting economic development, innovation and capacity building in all regions of the province.
