BACKGROUNDER
Below are projects approved to receive funding from the Green Transition Fund.
Baie Minerals Inc.
Baie Minerals Inc., formed in 2019 in Baie Verte, is receiving $472,500 in funding. The company has spent the last number of years developing technologies for decontaminating toxic minerals and upcycling value from the chrysotile mine tailings in Baie Verte. The purpose of the project is to build and operate a pilot demonstration plant that applies their green technology, which is a circular economy solution for decontaminating toxic waste from chrysotile mine tailing in Baie Verte and sustainably extracting industrial and critical minerals, thereby transforming these environmental liabilities into sustainable resources.
Maritime Resources Corporation
Maritime Resources is focused on gold exploration and development in the historic Baie Verte mining district. The company is receiving $154,000 for its pilot project of using Glycat Gold Leaching Technology as an alternative to traditional gold processing with cyanide leaching, which could have both cost and environmental benefits. Developed by Draslovka, GlyCat could have far reaching positive benefits if proven successful, such as increasing gold recoveries, lowering ore cutoff grade and attracting new investment. These direct benefits increase the overall value of the project on the region, extending employment, business opportunity and tax revenues. Exploring the use of GlyCat for its Hammerdown Gold project is an example of Maritime’s commitment to sustainable development.
Nunatsiavut Government
To support a proposed microgrid project in Nain, Labrador, the Nunatsiavut Government is receiving $3 million. Through engagement with the Nain Inuit Community Government, this project is intended to provide a sustainable and renewal energy source for coastal communities of Nunatsiavut. The project will consist of two wind turbines, a battery energy storage system and micro-grid controller with capacity to produce up to three megawatts of clean renewable energy. It is anticipated to displace approximately 1.3 – 1.6 million litres of fuel annually which will assist to reduce environmental risks including transportation risk, home heating challenges and greenhouse emissions.
NunatuKavut Community Council
The NunatuKavut Community Council, a not-for-profit organization, is receiving $157,500 to explore the feasibility of greenhouse agriculture supported by geothermal energy. This will help to improve food security in the NunatuKavut diesel-dependent communities of Cartwright and Port Hope Simpson. Geothermal energy extracted from internal planetary heat is a low-carbon form of energy-on-demand. The environmental benefits of a positive geothermal analysis versus diesel generated electricity supplied greenhouses are the impact on climate mitigation, improved air quality and lower risk of diesel spills.
Oil Filtration Solutions Ltd.
Oil Filtration Solutions Ltd., a leading player in the oil recycling and waste management sector, is receiving $65,552 for a multiyear project to introduce a suite of new technologies into its offerings. The company plans to demonstrate, test and expand its oil recycling technologies in three stages with a focus on achieving significant carbon footprint reductions by exploring alternative fueling cleaning solutions. The project will deliver substantial environmental benefits, including emissions reductions through reduced oil consumption, efficient cleaning solutions, and methods of cleaning heavy equipment that does not currently exist in the province. The project also fosters innovation and strengthens the local supply chain by creating opportunities for early adoption and technology transfer.
