The Honourable Steve Crocker, Minister of Industry, Energy and Technology, today announced two provincial government investments totalling $144,500 to support Cabox Geopark Inc. as it makes trail improvements and works towards attaining the UNESCO Global Geopark designation in the Corner Brook-Bay of Islands region.

Funding of $73,750 will help revitalize the Man in the Mountain Trail near Corner Brook as one of Cabox Geopark’s key attractions and as a Newfoundland and Labrador Destination Trail. Upgrades to the trail will enhance its quality and tourism appeal while reducing long-term maintenance demands. Destination Trails are located in areas that reflect the province’s most distinguishing and memorable viewscapes, natural features, culture, and heritage.

An additional $70,750 will support Phase III of Cabox Geopark’s development, including the completion of its UNESCO Global Geopark application. This phase will also assess the infrastructure and programming needed to operate a successful UNESCO Global Geopark.

These two contributions from the Regional Development Fund will be combined with an investment of $47,500 from Cabox Geopark Inc.

The Regional Development Fund provides support to organizations by way of non-repayable contributions for projects that support economic development, innovation and capacity building in all regions of the province.

Cabox Geopark, located in western Newfoundland’s Bay of Islands, is working to establish a UNESCO Global Geopark that complements the region’s rich cultural and historical narratives, and enhances the experiential tourism offerings already available. The designation will further strengthen Newfoundland and Labrador’s global reputation for celebrating and protecting geologically significant sites.
