The Provincial Government is investing more than $600,000 to support the John Howard Society of Newfoundland and Labrador’s new employment initiative, the Pathways program. This three-year project aims to enhance employment opportunities for individuals with criminal justice involvement, helping to address labour shortages and reduce recidivism.

The John Howard Society, a voluntary, non-profit agency, has a long-standing history of providing intervention, residential and employment services to adults and youth involved in the criminal justice system. The new Pathways program will build on existing services such as employment support, youth programming and assistance with record suspensions (formerly known as pardons).

The Pathways initiative will be delivered in two phases. Phase One will focus on research, including data collection and analysis to inform best practices. This phase will involve interviews with employers, justice system professionals and individuals with lived experience, while also fostering relationships with employers for future job placements.

Phase Two will involve collaboration with community organizations, employers and educational institutions to introduce participants to the construction and trades industry. It will include classroom-based training, short-term job-specific training and a four-week subsidized job placement.

The program will initially be offered in the St. John’s area and will leverage existing programs such as the New Day program and provide wrap-around support through the Next Steps program, addressing barriers like mental health and substance abuse.

The Government of Newfoundland and Labrador remains committed to supporting innovative programs that promote safer communities and improve social determinants of health for all residents.
