The Provincial Government today launched an interactive crime dashboard for Newfoundland and Labrador, which provides a detailed overview of the province’s statistical crime data.

The dashboard was developed by the Policing Transformation Working Group, in cooperation with Office of the Chief Information Officer, the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (B Division), to provide access to reliable and accurate crime statistics for every community throughout the province.

The Policing Transformation Working Group’s engagement initiatives, including a public survey, revealed the public’s request for more accessible and reliable information about crime statistics in their communities. There was a strong desire from stakeholders and the public to have access to public safety and crime data from a trusted and reliable source.

The data for the crime dashboard will be sourced annually from Statistics Canada’s police-reported crime statistics. The crime dashboard includes data from each of the province’s 45 police detachments, for the following: actual incidents of crime, crime rate, Crime Severity Index, crimes against persons, crimes against property, Criminal Code traffic violations, and other Criminal Code violations.

The Crime Dashboard can be found here.

The Policing Transformation Working Group was established by the Provincial Government in 2023, with a mandate to evaluate Newfoundland and Labrador’s current policing model, conduct public engagement, and provide ongoing advice to ensure Newfoundlanders and Labradorians receive the most effective and efficient policing services possible.

The Provincial Government provides over $180 million annually for policing services in Newfoundland and Labrador. Budget 2025 includes over $50 million for new initiatives for the Department of Justice and Public Safety, including five new RCMP officers in Happy Valley-Goose Bay and 10 new RNC officers for the Northeast Avalon.

Starting in 2026-27, an additional 19 police officers will be hired, this careful planning ensures that policing resources are strategically positioned to meet the evolving needs of our society. Budget 2025 also includes support for the establishment of a new Eastern region Joint-Task Force Unit comprised of RNC and RCMP officers to target weapon, drug, and contraband enforcement and critical incident response activities to complement the work of the Joint-Task Force Unit for the western region.

Quote
“Access to accurate statistical information that is reliable and understandable helps to build transparency and trust with citizens and helps to demonstrate accountability from our police services. It assists municipalities, community organizations and other interested parties to make decisions and allocate resources based on data and trends. I would like to thank the Policing Transformation Working Group for their work in developing a crime dashboard that delivers timely, accurate, and publicly accessible information. This is yet another step towards enhancing policing services in Newfoundland and Labrador.”
