Wildfire Information
Kingston
Crews at the Kingston wildfire report a good day with progress made through aerial and ground suppression efforts. There has been no significant growth.
Light winds created smoky conditions; however, water bombers were still able to action the western edge of the wildfire. Light-capacity helicopters and Ontario ground crews worked the southern area, including a flare up on Pickle Ridge. Towards the northern edge of the wildfire, four heavy-capacity helicopters worked the fire’s edge (one S61, one Super Puma, two Black Hawks). Ground crews and local fire departments were also in the area working in and around structures.
The Canadian Armed Forces completed additional hot spot scanning and will carry on with this work tomorrow.
Though the Kingston wildfire continues to be active, crews are feeling positive about work completed today. Tomorrow, the Incident Management Team will repeat today’s suppression efforts with air and ground crews actioned to priority areas.
Paddy’s Pond
Fuel break construction and ground suppression has helped to contain the Paddy’s Pond wildfire with boundaries continuing to hold.
Today, ground crews, the St. John’s Regional Fire Department, the Canadian Armed Forces and 20 firefighters from British Columbia completed hot spot monitoring and their work will continue tomorrow.
Martin Lake
The Martin Lake wildfire remains active with the size still approximately 1770 hectares. Weather conditions in the area today allowed four water bombers, a bird bog, and bucketing helicopters to continue suppression.
Ground crews continued their work on structure protection in cabin areas and suppression along the southwest boundary.
Re-opening of the Bay d’Espoir Highway (Route 360)
Effective tomorrow, Monday, August 18, the Provincial Government will re-open the Bay d’Espoir Highway (Route 360), which had previously closed with limited access due to the wildfire near Martin Lake.
Traffic will resume normal flow starting at 8:00 a.m. in the area between the Sunday Pond Resource Road to the Cat Brook turnaround area.
