Wildfire Information

Kingston
The Kingston wildfire was aided today by fog, relative humidity between 90-100 per cent, cool temperatures and two millimetres of rain that led to reduced fire behavior throughout the day.

While this weather limited air support, the S92 Raptor heavy helicopter was able to complete some missions as it is equipped differently than the other heavy helicopters. Two helicopters were able to bring crews into the northern sections while remaining ground crews from this province, Ontario and the Canadian Armed Forces and local volunteer firefighters were able to access their targets on foot.

The hottest part of the fire continues to be the southwestern corner. Water bomber work yesterday on the southwestern corner provided for improved fire conditions, and ground crews worked hot spots in southern areas throughout the day today. Fire activity on the western edge is also reduced due to weather and growth is anticipated to be limited.

Rain is anticipated overnight and combined with more cool temperatures and a chance of showers, tomorrow should be another good day for ground crews to dig into the fire. Aerial support is ready to work the fire tomorrow, and will take to the air as soon as the low ceiling clears.

Paddy’s Pond
Heavy rain and ground crew containment work on the Paddy’s Pond wildfire today resulted in a status update to “Being Held.” Ground crews from this province and British Columbia continued working the fire edges along the southeast corner and the western edge along the transmission line to complete the containment. Due to weather conditions, there was no light helicopter support. The Canadian Armed Forces will move to the Kingston fire tomorrow after a mandatory day of rest.

Martin Lake
Over 40 millimetres of rain fell on the Martin Lake wildfire through yesterday and into the night, with rain continuing today. Even with this rainfall, the fire remains active, burning deep into the thick forest floor. Fifty firefighters worked hotspots with support from helicopters bucketing. Significant work around the Rushy Pond Cabin area has reduced the fire risk and provided access for Crown Lands staff to continue to assess structural impacts.

Temporary Restriction on ALL Off-Road Vehicles on Forested Land Extended
The restriction on all off-road vehicles will remain in effect until 11:59 p.m., Wednesday, August 20, 2025, when it will be reviewed based on the forecasted wildfire index and fire behaviours. For more details, see: www.gov.nl.ca/releases/2025/ffa/0817n04/
