Wildfire Information
Kingston
While the ceiling didn’t clear as soon as expected today, ground crews had another strong day on the fire. A dozen ground crew members from Newfoundland and Labrador, 20 from Ontario, and 42 from British Columbia, along with three Canadian Armed Forces platoons, worked through hot spots all day, supported by heavy and small capacity helicopters. Today was the final day for support from the Canadian Armed Forces and we extend our appreciation to them for their incredible hard work over these past days.
Today’s sun and wind provided a good opportunity to see how the fire would behave in more favourable fire conditions. While we anticipate more smoke tonight and tomorrow, crews anticipate continuing with strong support and suppression.
Tomorrow’s approach remains the same with focused and persistent air and ground supports maintaining a strong response. Water bombers remain ready to work the fire if needed, however, no real targets presented themselves today. They remain at the ready for tomorrow.
Although the fire’s overall activity and behaviour continues to decrease, the wildfire remains categorized as “Out of Control”. Residents returning to the area are reminded that there will be smoke present, and in the evenings, an orange glow may be seen in the hills from hot spots. The fire remains at approximately 10,095 hectares.
Paddy’s Pond
The Paddy’s Pond wildfire is an estimated 318 hectares in size and classified as “Under Control” which means the wildfire has received sufficient suppression action to ensure there will be no further spread. Two Newfoundland and Labrador ground crew continue to be onsite monitoring the wildfire for any changes.
Martin Lake
Ground crews had another effective day on the Martin Lake wildfire. Its status is now considered “Under Control” and its size remains an estimated at 1,633 hectares. Ground crews from this province continue working hot spots and monitoring with helicopters bucketing to provide support as needed.
