Wildfire Information
Kingston
Nearly 35 millimetres of rain provided a strong day of working hot spots on the Kingston wildfire. 74 ground crew members from this province and British Columbia, with assistance from local fire departments, made good progress on the fire.
While the steady rain helped apply a consistent flow of moisture to the entire wildfire, air assets were unable to fly due to weather, smoke and the low ceiling. They will be back to work tomorrow once conditions allow.
Tomorrow’s forecast of sun and warm temperatures will give an opportunity to locate persistent hot spots.
The wildfire remains active, with lingering smoke continuing to affect the western boundary.
The Incident Management Team reports a steady decrease in overall fire activity, however, it is still classified as “Out of Control.” The wildfire remains estimated at 10,095 hectares in size.
Reception Centres Changes
AYLA Centre
The welcome centre at the AYLA Centre, in Lower Island Cove, will be closing at 5:00 p.m. tomorrow (August 27). The Salvation Army Mobile Unit will be at the centre and remain in the area following the closure to distribute water to residents. Signage will be posted on the facility doors regarding the closure.
Carbonear Academy/Splash Centre in Harbour Grace
The reception centre at Carbonear Academy is now closed. The new location is at the Splash Centre, 30A Cathedral Street, Harbour Grace, which opened at 3:00 p.m. today.
The Splash Centre is being staffed by Canadian Red Cross, the Salvation Army, government officials and numerous volunteers. The centre is providing food, refreshments, mental health supports, help with emergency accommodations and other supports to impacted residents who need them.
