The Provincial Government is monitoring forecast information on a strong weather system, due to Hurricane Melissa. It is anticipated to affect parts of the Avalon Peninsula this weekend starting this evening (October 31).

Hurricane Melissa is forecasted to track southeast of the Avalon Peninsula tonight, as an intense post-tropical storm, while a second deep low-pressure system approaches the province from the southwest. Elevated water levels are anticipated along parts of the south coast, while periods of heavy rain and strong winds will occur over some areas of the island.

Residents are encouraged to monitor the forecast from Environment Canada for the most up-to-date information.

Similar conditions in the past have caused localized low-level coastal flooding, travel disruptions, isolated power outages and wind damage. Residents are asked to take steps to ensure their own personal safety. Homeowners should secure loose items around their properties (outdoor furniture, Halloween decorations), ensure sump pumps are in working order, and safeguard important documents.

Motorists are reminded to check driving conditions and ferry updates via the NL511 mobile app, nl511.ca or call 511. Always drive according to the conditions in your area, and never cross floodwaters on foot or in a vehicle as the water may be deeper than it looks.
