The Honourable John Haggie, Minister of Municipal and Provincial Affairs, in partnership with Municipalities Newfoundland and Labrador and Professional Municipal Administrators of Newfoundland and Labrador, has proclaimed May 4 to 10, 2025, as Municipal Awareness Week.
Municipal government plays a vital role in strengthening communities and improving the lives of Newfoundlanders and Labradorians. The dedication of mayors, council members and municipal administrators is fundamental to ensuring effective local governance. Through ongoing collaboration, partnerships and involvement of residents, municipal governments are actively striving to build stronger, sustainable communities.
The Department of Municipal and Provincial Affairs remains committed to providing stability and predictability to municipalities throughout the province. Budget 2025: Smarter. Stronger. Better., supports municipalities by investing $187.5 million for funding programs and grants including Municipal Operating Grants, Special Assistance Grants, Community Enhancement Employment Program, Provincial Gas Tax and Canada Community-Building Fund.
Many towns and cities will hold special events throughout the course of Municipal Awareness Week, to acknowledge and celebrate the contribution of those working within the municipal sector. Residents are encouraged to check with their local councils on events or visit Municipalities Newfoundland and Labrador’s website for more information about the week.
