The Honourable Steve Crocker, Minister of Tourism, Culture, Arts and Recreation, today announced special Year of Sport funding to support North America’s oldest sporting event – the Royal St. John’s Regatta.
Minister Crocker was joined at the event by Ashley Peach, president of the Royal St. John’s Regatta Committee and Keith White, vice-president of the Royal St. John’s Regatta Committee.
This year’s event will be known as the Year of Sport Royal St. John’s Regatta and will include the following enhancements:
- an investment to provide new floating docks and other infrastructure upgrades
- a new Learn to Row program
- a Regatta Eve concert with a free park and ride service
- special edition Year of Sport branded medals
- a Regatta Day race named after the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador
Now in its 207th year, the Royal St. John’s Regatta is an annual event which is a special summer tradition for many. The races and pondside garden party are known to attract up to 50,000 spectators each year to the shores of Quidi Vidi Lake.
