Media Advisory: Minister Hutton Participating in Ceremony Commemorating the Battle of the Somme in Beaumont Hamel

The Honourable Fred Hutton, Minister of Tourism, Culture, Arts and Recreation, will participate in this year’s ceremony commemorating the Battle of the Somme and the efforts and sacrifices of the Royal Newfoundland Regiment in Beaumont Hamel, France.

The event takes place on July 1 at 4:00 p.m. local time. As part of the ceremony, Minister Hutton will address attendees and lay a wreath at the Beaumont Hamel Newfoundland Memorial.

Minister Hutton will be joined by the Honourable Gerry Byrne, Minister of Jobs, Immigration and Growth. The ceremony will also be attended by the Honourable Stéphane Dion, Ambassador to France and Monaco, and Special Envoy to the European Union and Europe; Madame Laurence Lecoustre, Sous-Préfète de Peronne representing the Government of France; and military representatives from various embassies.

This ceremony is also attended by the annual Trail of the Caribou Student Pilgrimage. This year, 100 students from throughout Newfoundland and Labrador are participating in the pilgrimage to ensure the sacrifices of the Royal Newfoundland Regiment are never forgotten.
