Given the unprecedented wildfire activity in Newfoundland and Labrador, the Department of Tourism, Culture, Arts and Recreation is advising that Provincial Parks will be implementing temporary wildfire prevention measures.
Newfoundland and Labrador is home to 32 provincial parks, each offering visitors the chance to enjoy and explore unique natural landscapes. These parks, particularly in forested areas, often contain an abundance of dry ground debris—such as fallen branches, leaves, and needles—created by the natural life cycle of the forest. On busy weekends, some parks see up to 600 visitors, increasing the potential for accidental fires.
To mitigate risks during this volatile time, Provincial Parks will be implementing the following temporary measures:
- In parks with campgrounds, smoking is restricted to graveled campsites only. Park patrons are asked to responsibly dispose of cigarette butts by placing them in a vessel of water.
- Smoking is banned in all Day Use Parks and Park Reserves, including the T’Railway Provincial Park.
- Burning devices are banned, including propane fire pits. Gas burning devices are permitted solely for the purpose of food preparation
- Generators are also banned, with exceptions for those required for documented medical conditions.
These measures are in place effective immediately and for the duration of this weekend. The Department of Tourism, Culture, Arts and Recreation will provide an update on Monday, August 18.
ParksNL staff will be closely monitoring all sites for compliance. If you are enjoying a Provincial Park this weekend and observe behaviour that is not in compliance with these restrictions, please advise ParksNL staff immediately.
At this time, it is important for everyone to do their part in protecting our people and natural resources. By following fire safety rules, we can all help preserve landscapes, maintain air quality and keep trails, campsites and recreation areas open for all to enjoy.
