The road construction season is well underway in Newfoundland and Labrador, with close to $152 million in contracts recently being awarded for 2025-2026.
A total of 49 tenders have been issued this season and, to date, 42 contracts have been awarded. Some of these projects include:
- $4.3 million awarded for the rehabilitation of various sections of Route 70, 70-20 and 72 (Roaches Line and Conception Bay Highway).
- $8.5 million awarded for the rehabilitation of various sections of Routes 221, 221-10 and 222 (Burin Road and Salt Pond-Winterland Road).
- $6.9 million awarded for the rehabilitation of 9.2 kilometres between Birchy Lookout to Birchy Bridge on the Trans-Canada Highway.
- $12.3 million awarded for the rehabilitation of various sections on Route 430 and 430-34 (Northern Peninsula).
The road transportation network throughout Newfoundland and Labrador includes approximately 10,000 kilometres of provincial highways and roads, as well as 1,300 bridges. To maintain this vast network, in 2023 the Provincial Government made a historic investment of $1.4 billion over a five-year period.
Highway construction projects selected for the roads plan are based on factors such as climate change impacts; highway safety; traffic volumes; input from the department’s engineers; commercial, industry, and tourism impacts; populations serviced; and input from motorists. A public consultation on the multi-year roads plan conducted earlier this winter received 362 suggestions.
Information on open calls for bids issued and awarded by the department and other public bodies is available by visiting www.merx.com/govnl.
The department urges the travelling public to exercise caution in construction zones and reminds drivers that fines for speeding in these areas range from $100 to $1,500.
Information on active highway construction projects and repairs is also available by visiting nl511.ca and on the NL 511 mobile app.
