Today, the Honourable Tony Wakeham, Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador, issued the following statement on the passing of the Honourable Len Simms, E.C.N.L.:
“It is with a heavy heart that we acknowledge the passing of the Honourable Len Simms.
A true public servant to the people of our great province, Len answered the call to serve in 1979 and went on to build a distinguished career in public life. Over the years, he served as a Member of the House of Assembly, 32nd Speaker of the Newfoundland and Labrador House of Assembly, Cabinet Minister, and Leader of the Official Opposition.
Following his time in elected office, Len continued his commitment to public service, leaving a lasting mark on numerous community and charitable organizations throughout the province. He was many things to many people, but above all, he was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. His family was the driving force behind his desire to make our province a better place for all.
Len embodied the very best of public life – an enduring commitment to improving the lives of those around him.
While we mourn his passing, our province is stronger because of inspirational leaders like Len. On behalf of our government and all Newfoundlanders and Labradorians, I extend our deepest sympathies to his family, friends, and all who loved him.
Rest in peace, my friend.”
