Provincial Government to Close Newfoundland and Labrador’s Boston Office

  • Executive Council

February 3, 2026

The Government of Newfoundland and Labrador is proceeding with the closure of the Province’s Boston Office as part of its commitment to responsible fiscal management and a renewed, globally focused economic development strategy.

The decision reflects the need to ensure public resources are directed toward initiatives that best support long-term growth, competitiveness and financial sustainability. The closure will save the province approximately $1 million annually.

Long-term economic growth is one of the new Provincial Government’s top priorities, because the path to fiscal sustainability starts with getting Newfoundland and Labrador moving again. That means focusing on job creation, growing our economy and making sure our resources are deployed where they can deliver the greatest impact for all of us.

Global trade conditions continue to evolve, with shifting tariffs, changing market dynamics and new opportunities emerging globally. The Provincial Government has determined that concentrating resources in a single geographic location is no longer the most effective approach to advancing international trade and attracting investment.

Going forward, international business development efforts will be coordinated from within Newfoundland and Labrador, drawing on the expertise of the Departments of Jobs, Growth and Rural Development; Energy and Mines; Fisheries and Aquaculture; and Intergovernmental Affairs Secretariat. These departments will continue to pursue opportunities in established markets while diversifying and expanding outreach in regions such as Asia and Europe.

The Provincial Government will continue to maintain strong relationships with partners in New England, with engagement managed from its home base.

“Closing our Boston Office is about making sure every public dollar is working as hard as possible for the people of Newfoundland and Labrador. Global markets are shifting, and our approach to economic development has to evolve with them. By coordinating our efforts from home and broadening our reach internationally, we can focus on job creation, growing our economy and pursuing new opportunities for our businesses, while continuing to work with our long-standing partners in New England.”
