The Honourable Tony Wakeham, Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador, today marked his first 100 days in office by reaffirming his new government’s focus on delivering better health care, lower taxes, and safer communities – all supported by a disciplined and ambitious economic agenda for Newfoundland and Labrador.
The Premier highlighted several early initiatives introduced by his government to deliver for Newfoundlanders and Labradorians, including:
- Strengthening health care by refreshing the leadership at Newfoundland and Labrador Health Services and initiating a new advocacy approach with the Federal Government on national pharmacare leading towards a spring budget that will focus on health-care workers and patient access.
- Lowering taxes and supporting affordability by freezing university tuition and committing to meaningful tax relief in the first Wakeham Government budget.
- Building safer communities by restoring 24 snow-clearing operations and launching a review and renewal process for the provincial court system.
- Restoring responsible finances by releasing a fall fiscal update, revising wasteful spending in the previous government’s infrastructure plans and closing the province’s Boston office.
- Standing up for Newfoundland and Labrador by cancelling the MOU on a marine protected area on the south coast, launching a truly independent review of the Churchill River Memorandum of Understanding, and launching new national advocacy for Newfoundland and Labrador to receive its fair share of federal defence and healthcare spending.
- Developing Newfoundland and Labrador’s Economy by re-engaging with national and global offshore energy proponents to restart new offshore oil projects, starting with Bay du Nord.

I promised Newfoundlanders and Labradorians that our government will focus on better health care, lower taxes and safer communities and in our first budget, you can expect to see us make meaningful investments in each priority in order to deliver a better, brighter future for all of us.”
