A new urgent care centre for the metro region is opening January 12, increasing access to healthcare for patients with urgent, non-life-threatening injuries and illnesses and reducing strain on emergency departments.

The Honourable Lela Evans, Minister of Health and Community Services, toured the new urgent care centre at Unity Health Centre, 28 Stavanger Drive, St. John’s, in advance of its public opening.

The urgent care centre will provide assessment and treatment of non-life-threatening conditions from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. seven days a week. The centre offers both walk-in services and appointments. Residents with or without a primary care provider can meet with the clinic’s nurses, physicians, nurse practitioners, social workers and other staff to receive care for:

  • Injuries, including sprains, strains and minor breaks.
  • Skin infections, burns and cuts.
  • Respiratory infections with fever, cough and/or shortness of breath.
  • Stomach illness with nausea, vomiting and/or diarrhea.
  • Urinary tract infections.

Bloodwork, X-rays, casting, stitches and other required treatments are also available on site.

The site is also the location of the new ambulatory health hub, which provides appointment-based outpatient services such as an eye clinic, cardiac diagnostics and adult outpatient anticoagulation management services.

Free parking is available for patients and staff at the new urgent care centre and the ambulatory health hub.

An urgent care centre on Topsail Road is anticipated to open later this year.

The new Provincial Government recognizes that urgent care centres enable Newfoundlanders and Labradorians to receive the right care at the right time. Planning work is also beginning on a new urgent care centre for Conception Bay South.

Quote
“Increasing access to healthcare for all of us is one of the pillars of our new government. The new urgent care centre provides quick medical care to residents with non-life-threatening conditions seven days a week. This will help reduce the number of people going to the emergency departments in St. John’s and we look forward to future plans for urgent care centres.”
