Celebrating Data Privacy Week

January 26, 2026

The Office of the Information and Privacy Commissioner (OIPC) joins organizations across Canada and around the world in recognizing Data Privacy Day on January 28. Data Privacy Day has now expanded to a week of privacy awareness initiatives. This annual event highlights why protecting personal information and respecting privacy rights matters. Join us in celebrating Data Privacy Week throughout the week of January 26-30, 2026.

To mark this year’s Data Privacy Week, we are excited to announce the launch of our Youth Privacy Resources webpage, a hub with materials designed to help young people understand and protect their personal information online. These resources, some of which are also available in French, aim to build privacy awareness and empower youth to make informed choices. We also created for distribution a Privacy Principles Poster, available on our website for download, which outlines the 10 principles that form the foundation of many privacy laws across Canada, including the laws in our province.

“Data Privacy Week is an opportunity to reflect on how we protect personal information in a rapidly changing world,” said Kerry Hatfield, Information and Privacy Commissioner. “Privacy awareness is the first step toward making good choices. Our goal is for privacy to become part of everyday conversations.”

Privacy has been recognized by the Supreme Court of Canada as a right of all Canadians under the Charter of Rights and Freedoms. In this Province, privacy is protected by law through the Access to Information and Protection of Privacy Act, 2015 and the Personal Health Information Act.
