The primary goal of the Occupational Health and Safety Division (OHS) is accident and illness prevention. OHS recognizes that all workers have a fundamental right to a workplace that neither impairs their health nor imperils their safety. This is achieved by working with stakeholders to establish, promote an enforce workplace practices, standards and procedures.
The OHS Division is responsible for the administration of the following legislation:
- Occupational Health and Safety Act
- Occupational Health and Safety Regulations
- Radiation Health and Safety Act
- Radiation Health and Safety Regulations
- Asbestos Abatement Regulations
- First Aid Regulations
- Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS) Regulations
The OHS Division is supported by a complement of staff including inspections officers, industrial hygienists, engineers, and consultants to perform various multi-disciplinary activities. There are approximately 16,000 employers with about 220,000 employees in the province.

- Conducting compliance inspections and detailed audits of workplaces.
- Investigating workplace accidents.
- Hygiene assessments of various physical, chemical, biological and ergonomic agents in the workplace in order to protect worker health.
- Inspecting and assessing workplaces with respect to harassment prevention.
- Evaluating and inspecting radiation control measures in workplaces.
- Enforcing Occupational Health and Safety Legislation.
